Fan march is part of the sports appeal during the World Cup in Vancouver.

It’s the summer of soccer, and Vancouver is basking in the reflected glory of FIFA World Cup matches, the Canadian men’s team’s success both here and in Toronto and the footy-fuelled vibe that’s overtaken the city.

What’s not to love? Having been downtown during the winning men’s gold medal hockey match of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, I can report that this summer’s sporting vibes in and around Rogers Arena and BC Place Stadium have been exceptional.

Palpable energy inside BC Place Stadium during Canada's match with Switzerland.

The closest seats and suites to the sports action are at JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, right in the heart of the city’s Stadium District. Here’s how to get game ready so you can enjoy the best of this season’s sporting and concert events as well as those to come.

Room with a view

Getting game ready for the World Cup in Vancouver.

Vancouver’s reputation as a beautiful urban space within a naturally stunning setting is well-deserved. This city is gorgeous in summer. The spacious suites at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver are designed to wring every bit of that beauty out of the floor to ceiling windows.

Science World is a giant World Cup soccer ball. 131 panels honouring the three host nations.

To the north, incomparable views of BC Place Stadium and the downtown core. Turn your gaze southwards to watch the water taxis ply the waters of False Creek and witness the buzz around the Olympic Village and giant Science World soccer ball, made up of 131 panels celebrating the tournament’s three host nations.

Higher floor rooms have both these superlative views, as well as lots of natural light, comfortable plush beds, a spacious living room seating area, marble-clad bathroom with deep soaker tub, two widescreen televisions and a minibar stocked with easy to use (no manual required) Illy coffee machine and supplies.

Convenient access to BC Place and Rogers Arena for sporting events and concerts is directly from the hotel; it’s one of the property’s superpowers. Guests don’t have to walk far to access their favourite musical acts or sports teams. (During the FIFA World Cup, note that stadium entrance is via the Match Day Spectator Route, accessible to the east of the hotel property, at Science World.)

Patio Picnic

A feast at Le Picnic by Veuve Clicquot.

There is nothing better than summer dining al fresco. It’s even more magnifique if it’s at the Parisian-influenced Le Picnic by Veuve Clicquot on the rooftop patio in the JW Garden. Canary yellow umbrellas shade guests nibbling on tasty bites (hello lobster poutine!) with locally sourced ingredients that may include a touch of honey from rooftop hives, bubbling glasses of Veuve Clicquot champagne cocktails and live music nightly, all summer long. Santé!

Additional Parq Vancouver dining options include Honey Salt for farm-to-table cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, regional ingredients, and The Victor for an elegant and elevated steak and seafood experience.

Stress relief

Spa life at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver.

The triple-glazed windows suppress city sounds to ensure a good night’s sleep. Lower those cortisol levels even further with a workout in the hotel’s 24-hour fitness center, then ease sore muscles in the outdoor Aqua Lounge terrace and hydrotherapy pool while enjoying city views and JW Garden blooms.

The Spa by JW provides more opportunities to sink into stress relief with soothing face and body treatments. For something different, I indulged in a 25-minute Mind-Sync Harmonic Sleep Lounger session, experiencing a zero-gravity sound therapy treatment that promotes deep relaxation and mental clarity. At least, it did for me.

Game Ready

Canadian pride on full display in Vancouver.

The hotel is decked out in impressive soccer-themed celebratory swag, including soccer-inspired floral installations, done in partnership with Fleurs de Villes, including a giant floral soccer ball in the lobby and a six-foot trophy-inspired installation in the Executive Lounge.

As the closest hotel property to BC Place and Rogers Arena, JW Marriott Parq Vancouver provides guests with the easiest way to access annual sporting and concert events – you’re right next store to the action.

During the World Cup, pedestrian access does involve recirculating to Science World to walk the 20 minutes to the start of the Last Mile with fellow sports fans. It takes longer on game days as the crowd crush is real and moves more slowly. But this is a highlight of enjoying the tournament.

It’s a simple joy to just relax and embrace the excitement and energy that has come to Vancouver during the largest sporting event in the world. The opportunity to stay and experience the city during these historic World Cup matches makes for unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime memories.
