4 Fun Things in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Ah, Saskatoon…a hub of activity and culture in the prairies. Framed by the arts, the South Saskatchewan River and history, it’s an excellent Canadian spot to spend a day or few.
It wasn’t my first visit and during this visit, I discovered some new things that can appeal to the masses.

Home Base: The Alt Hotel Saskatoon

Conveniently located close to the river, The Alt Hotel Saskatoon properties are known for their playfulness and comfortable rooms. My suite looked onto the river, the bed was quite comfortable and there’s an excellent on-site restaurant, Bokeh on the Plaza.
Underground parking makes it that much better.

Saskatchewan Railway Museum

20 minutes southwest of downtown brings you to the Saskatchewan Railway Museum. 
Enjoy and learn about the collection of old trains, an old train station and life on and around the rails
There are heaps of history that’s waiting to be discovered here and how it helped shape the prairies. 
For nearly four decades, the museum has been welcoming and educating visitors on this cornerstone of transportation from decades ago in Saskatchewan.

Kayaking with Local Adventure Co.

As expected, kayaking was included on my visit to Saskatoon.
My two-ish hour tour saw myself and my guide launch our kayaks at Poplar Bluffs Conservation Area, 20-ish minutes south of home base.
During our 13 km journey on the South Saskatchewan River, we leisurely let the water move us with minimal paddle inputs at the beginning so we could soak in the atmosphere and aura of our surroundings. I dislike the cliche of “time moves slower here…blah blah blah” and instead, I’ll say the water wasn’t in a rush, and neither were we.
From seeing bits and pieces of local wildlife, to passing beneath bridges and and putting ourselves in high gear on the final portion (notice the green line after the 219 on the map image,) the excursion was surrounded with serenity.
The tour wrapped up along the waterfront trail and conveniently a two minute walk from the Alt Hotel Saskatoon.

Gather Local Market

Under 10 minutes away via foot from home base, Gather Local Market is exactly what it sounds like; a gathering place with local vendors.
They describe themselves as “ an accessible, inclusive, and interactive place for people to eat, drink, shop, and support Saskatchewan’s thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
At the time of publishing, there are 13 vendors on site. The vibe is cool and responsible me only had one dinner during my evening visit, courtesy of Pops Shawarma. Yes, I wanted to try all the food spots but this means I’ll have to come back again and again to try them all.

Waterfront Walk

A summer stroll along Saskatoon’s River Landing Waterfront Paths is a must. From art beneath bridges, to hundreds of rocks with personalized messages, to live music and art and of course, being close to the water, the trail is a jewel.
You can explore all or some of it, take a seat and watch boats and kayaks float by and the night I was there, live music and salsa dancing was the live entertainment of the night.  

If you can, do a morning and evening walk for a cool contrast in light and atmosphere.
