You can be fairly certain that looking for the best restaurants in Gananoque isn't on most people's lists when researching the region. More often than not they'll be looking for fun activities and then trying to find something to eat after they get there, but visitors to this town shouldn't sleep on the food scene. While it is indeed a small town, there's a lot to see, do, and eat!

The great thing about downtown Gananoque is that fast-food restaurants don’t occupy space on every street corner, and this helps to maintain the small-town charm. But why would anyone want fast-food when there's such a variety of restaurants spread along King Street?

Restaurants In Gananoque You Have To Visit

For a small town Gananoque boasts a nice assortment of restaurants, and they all do food the right way.

Many restaurants source their produce and meat from local farms, and many of these purveyors are family-run operations that have been in business for a long time. This has allowed both farmers and restaurateurs to build a trusting relationship with each other.

They use quality ingredients, make it fresh, and provide great service. Keep reading to find spots for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a bite or two in between. They all provide great fuel before and after you explore some of the 1000 Islands (1864 to be exact).

Laverne's Eatery

One of the more popular breakfast joints in town is Laverne's Eatery.

Their Instagram bio mentions that it's where the locals hang out. This sounds like a line used for marketing purposes, but on any visit, you'll hear the staff greet diners by their names and even enquire about their families.

Most of Laverne's ingredients come from local producers, and this results in dishes that are rich and flavourful.

The breakfast menu consists of a variety of espresso-based drinks, baked goods, breakfast bowls, avocado toasts, and egg dishes. The lunch menu is also filled with delicious dishes like flatbreads, sandwiches, and special themes like the week of Caribbean-inspired dishes they had recently.

During the warmer months, the patio and their lineup of craft beers is another huge draw for Laverne's.

Muskie Jake's Tap & Grill

Muskie Jake's Tap & Grill is located in the historic Gananoque Inn & Spa and is named after Jake Huntley, a local fisherman who spent over 60 years as a guide for people wanting to fish the St. Lawrence River.

On any warm summer day, their patio overlooking the St. Lawrence River is the most popular one in town.

While you're dining, you'll often see boaters pull up to the dock for a relaxing meal. Come for the food, stay for the views!

The menu itself isn't very big, but it has all the basics that you'd want for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From breakfast items to burgers to steaks, everything is well made, and they even do a nice job with their wings! If you're staying at The Gananoque Inn, then Muskie Jake's is the perfect spot to start your day.

Panache Bakery & Cafe

After a bit of exploring, you should head to Panache Bakery & Cafe for a light lunch. Sandwiches, pastries, teas, and handcrafted coffee-based drinks are all offered up here with a smile. Grab a seat by the big windows that look out onto King Street and watch the world go by. It's a cozy spot with walls decorated with works from local artists.

The grilled cheese sandwich with pesto and gruyere on their sourdough bread comes highly recommended.

Maple Leaf Restaurant

Another popular restaurant in Gananoque, with locals as well as visitors, is the Maple Leaf Restaurant.

This restaurant has been operating at the same location, and by the same family, for over 30 years. As you step inside, you're transported straight to a small Czech town where you’re treated like an old friend.

On the menu, diners will find the usual burgers and sandwiches, but everyone comes here for the Eastern European section of the menu where you’ll find classics like borscht, sausages, spaetzle, and their famous schnitzels. Everything is made from scratch and the kitchen is open so you can easily check out the action.

The Purple House Cafe

A visit to Gananoque isn't complete without a meal from The (aptly named) Purple House Cafe. Located near the marina, on a residential street, this spot is hard to miss. It's a big purple house with a lush garden filled with people with big smiles on their faces.

They’re known for their tasty salads and arguably the best wood-fired pizza in Gananoque. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, but if the weather is co-operating, then the garden is where you want to be.

The vibe, lush garden, delicious pizzas, and friendly service make this one of the best restaurants in Gananoque.

Riva Restaurant In Gananoque

So far the list of restaurants in Gananoque has been all casual eateries, but for something more upscale, and romantic, head to Riva Restaurant for a night of Italian cuisine.

Riva is situated in a beautifully restored historic building steps away from Confederation Park. Riva serves lunch and dinner and they also have a small market stocked with a variety of frozen meals, soups, pizza, and baked goods. Guests will also find an on-site wine shop where they can grab a bottle, or two, to go with takeaway dinners, or just for the hell of it.

The lunch menu at Riva consists of sandwiches, pizzas, and, of course, pastas.

For dinner they kick it up a bit with steaks, seafood, a bigger pasta selection, and nightly features.

Their wine list is also very impressive and the quality flows right into their wine shop with highly rated bottles for sale.

The staff is very knowledgeable and will gladly take the time to walk you through the menu if you have questions. Service at Riva is impeccable and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Why Gananoque is Worth the Culinary Detour

Skip the highway fast-food stops and give Gananoque's local food scene a real chance. This town rewards travellers who take the time to park the car, walk down King Street, and support the independent, family-run operations.

From a quick morning pastry before hitting the tourboats to an upscale Italian dinner to wrap up a weekend trip, the quality here stands entirely on its own. You come to the 1000 Islands for the scenery, but it’s the hospitality and the exceptionally fresh, local flavours that will make you want to plan a return trip.
