A single touton, dipped in molasses, from the Gander Bread Box & Café/Jennifer Bain

WHAT: Toutons

WHERE: Gander Bread Box & Café, 136 Bennett Dr., Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador

PRICE: $5

DISH DECONSTRUCTION: Two pieces of bread dough, shaped like pancakes, grilled and served with molasses and butter. Here you can order them like toast or hash browns as an all-day breakfast side dish, or as part of breakfast sandwiches and burgers.

WHY: My go-to lunch spot in Gander for pea soup, turkey/dressing/cranberry sandwiches and toutons. I just recently discovered that the Gander Bread Box also makes a wicked cinnamon loaf.

FUN FACT: Pronounced tout-ens (tout rhymes with pout), toutons started in Newfoundland and Labrador as an economical way to use up leftover bread dough. They’re usually pan-fried in a skillet using butter, oil or even pork fat, and served with breakfast alongside things like bologna.
