A single glorious rib, dubbed a Dog Bone, on the menu at De’d Dog Bar & Grill in Jasper/Jennifer Bain

WHAT: Dog Bone (Beef Rib)

WHERE: De’d Dog Bar & Grill, Jasper, Alberta

PRICE: $9

DISH DECONSTRUCTION: One beef rib, smothered in house barbecue sauce.

WHY: I have been compulsively reading menus for a living since 2000 and can say with confidence that this is the only time I’ve spotted a single beef rib on an appetizer menu somewhere that doesn’t specialize in ribs. This beauty was paired with a mini poutine (usually $17) when I visited De’d Dog on the Downtown Foodie Tour with Jasper Food Tours.

FUN FACT: What started as the Astoria Bar in 1927 got its memorable De’d Dog name in 1995. It’s one of the places that Jasperites love to hang out. “Like a fine wine, the De’d Dog will continue to develop character and flavour as time goes on,” it promises on its website.  Look for the memorial for dogs in the entranceway, and the commemorative wall full of framed photos of local patrons who’ve died.
