A takeout version of saffron chicken kebabs with saffron rice from Persepolis in St. John’s, NL/Jennifer Bain

WHAT: Saffron Chicken Kebab

WHERE: Persepolis Persian Restaurant, 585 Torbay Rd., St. John’s, NL

PRICE: $26

DISH DECONSTRUCTION: The Saffron Chicken Kebab Meal finds spiced thighs with a choice of saffron rice, dill rice, naan or salad. Do yourself a favour and get the otherworldly saffron rice. Mine came with a simple side salad made of iceberg lettuce, black olives and carrots.

WHY: One of my guilty travel secrets is that sometimes I’m too tired to go out and just order food to my hotel room. That was the case on a my last one-nighter in St. John’s staying near the airport at my favourite Best Western Plus. I spotted Persepolis on Uber Eats and gave its Persian cuisine a whirl. The chicken and rice held up beautifully and next time I’ll make an effort to properly visit the restaurant.

FUN FACT: Open since 2022 and owned by Negin Mirzabeigi and her husband Mohammad Ghazazani, Persepolis is off the radar of most visitors since it’s in big box land and nowhere near downtown.
