My takeout Smashed Potato Salad from Olive et Gourmando held up well for the train trip to Toronto/Jennifer Bain
WHAT: Smashed Potato Salad
WHERE: Olive et Gourmando, 351 Rue Saint-Paul Ouest, Old Montréal (plus a second branch in Royalmount)
PRICE: $8.95
DISH DECONSTRUCTION: As the menu explains, smashed grelot potatos (young French baby potatoes) are paired with a creamy dressing, fresh herbs and everything spice mix for a fresh and flavour-packed dish that’s served warm.
WHY: I know I just raved about O+G’s sweet ricotta toast, but this potato salad is far more complex than it lets on and I even make it at home. I got a portion to go for my train ride home to Toronto.
FUN FACT: From a Tastet recipe discovered online, I learned that the distinctive dressing is vegan and made from vegan mayo, cider vinegar, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, olive oil and chopped mixed herbs. I spied dill, green onions and chives. For a DIY “everything spice mix,” combine poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried onion flakes, dried garlic granules, caraway seeds, sugar and sea salt.
