The Sweet Ricotta at Olive et Gourmando in Old Montréal is enlivened with generous amounts of honey and orange zest/Jennifer Bain
WHAT: Sweet Ricotta
WHERE: Olive et Gourmando, 351 Rue Saint-Paul Ouest, Old Montréal (plus a second branch in Royalmount)
PRICE: $18.95
DISH DECONSTRUCTION: A generous dollop of house-made ricotta anchors my breakfast plate. On top, there’s a well filled with flavourful, runny honey. Scattered over everything is a generous amount of orange zest and a hint of Maldon flaky sea salt. Alongside this are two pieces of toast.
WHY: This deceptively simple dish has haunted me (in a good way) since I first tried it in 2024. It’s easy enough to make at home, but extra wonderful here at this popular bakery-café-restaurant in Old Montréal because of the homemade ricotta and laidback ambiance.
FUN FACT: O+G has been dishing up “homemade heartfelt cooking since 1998.” Come when it opens (we arrived at 8 a.m. one day and between the breakfast and lunch rush another day) or prepare for lineups. Save time for the O+G shop next door.
On the kid-friendly side of the menu at O+G, my son had a fancy grilled cheese (“without the terrible onions”), pain au chocolat and hot chocolate/Jennifer Bain
